Every July, the World meets in Waynesville at Folkmook USA - The State International Festival of North Carolina. This grand event has featured more than 200 groups from 100 different countries over the last 26 years and is considered one of top 20 annual events in the Southeast. An entirely new program of performers is offered each year with participants travelling from many countries around the world to share culture, song and dance.
Maggie Valley is just 15 minutes from downtown Waynesville and home to Ghost Town in the Sky, Cataloochee Guest (Dude) Ranch, the Annual Moonlight Madness Race plus unique gift shops and many interesting restaurants. For winter sports, Cataloochee Ski Area is a great venue for snow skiing and snowboarding.
Haywood County is also home to Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center, the headquarters of the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. The Methodist Assembly holds several conferences throughout the year and other events for special interest groups and is home to the Lake Junaluska Heritage Museum and the World Methodist Museum.
